Bhaderwah is a green valley town in Doda district, often called the Mini Kashmir of Jammu and known locally as Nagon ki Bhoomi, the land of the serpent deities. Surrounded by deodar forests, high meadows and snow-capped peaks, it is one of the most beautiful and least crowded destinations in the region.
The only catch is distance: Bhaderwah is a long drive from Jammu. That is why many travellers break the journey in Sanasar, which lies near the route and turns a tiring drive into a two-destination holiday.
Places to Visit in Bhaderwah
- Padri (Padri Gali): a high, rolling pass about 40 km from Bhaderwah on the Bhaderwah–Chamba road, at over 3,000 m. Heavy winter snow often lingers into June, and summer brings picnics and paragliding.
- Guldanda: a scenic meadow on the road towards Padri, popular for views and snow play.
- Jai Valley: a long, deodar-lined valley about 32–35 km from town, with a sprawling meadow and a stream known for trout.
- Chinta Valley: a quieter valley closer to town, good for riverside walks and picnics.
- Khellani: a deodar-clad plateau overlooking the Kellar valley, known for its fruit orchards from late summer.
- Vasuki Nag Temple: the town’s revered temple and starting point of the Kailash Kund yatra, held each August.
- Seoj Meadow and Kailash Kund: high-altitude meadow and sacred lake for experienced trekkers.
Best Time to Visit Bhaderwah
May–June and September–October are ideal, with pleasant weather and open roads. In winter the valley gets heavy snow and high areas such as Padri are often cut off. July–August brings monsoon rain and a risk of landslides.
How to Reach Bhaderwah
By road: approximately 190–205 km from Jammu via Udhampur, the Chenani–Nashri Tunnel, Batote and Pul Doda. Expect a full day on mountain roads. By rail: Udhampur is the nearest practical railway station, with shared taxis onwards. By air: Jammu Airport is the nearest airport.
Break the Journey at Sanasar
The drive from Jammu to Bhaderwah is long and winding. Sanasar sits just off the route near the Chenani–Nashri Tunnel, so it makes a natural first night. You arrive fresh, and you get a second beautiful destination on the same trip.
