Patnitop is one of the best-known hill stations in the Jammu region: a pine-forested plateau at around 2,024 metres in Udhampur district. Its name is believed to come from Patan Da Talab, the “Pond of the Princess”. For decades it was the classic stop on the Jammu–Srinagar highway. Since the Chenani–Nashri Tunnel opened, through traffic bypasses Patnitop, so today it is a destination in its own right.
Most visitors come for cool air, pine forests and winter snow. What many don’t realise is that some of the most beautiful places in the area lie just beyond Patnitop, including Nathatop and the wide, peaceful meadow of Sanasar.
Things to Do in Patnitop
- Naag Temple (Naag Mandir): one of the oldest shrines in the area, especially busy during Nag Panchami in August.
- Forest walks and picnics: gentle trails through pine and deodar forest, ideal for families.
- Madhatop: a quieter viewpoint about 5 km away, with gentle snow slopes for beginners in winter.
- Shiv Garh trek: about 11 km from Patnitop, with views over Kud and Batote.
- Billoo ki Powri: a historic stone staircase near Kud, believed to have been built as a shortcut to Batote.
- Winter snow: sledging, snow play and beginner skiing from late December to February.
- Nathatop: the highest viewpoint in the area, known for Himalayan views and paragliding, on the road to Sanasar.
Best Time to Visit Patnitop
- March–June: pleasant days and cool nights; the most comfortable time for sightseeing.
- July–August: monsoon; green but rainy, with occasional landslides on mountain roads.
- September–November: clear skies and crisp weather, fewer crowds.
- December–February: snow season; beautiful, but very busy on weekends and roads can close after heavy snowfall.
How to Reach Patnitop
By road: Patnitop is approximately 110 km from Jammu via Udhampur, around 3 to 3.5 hours by taxi or car. By rail: Udhampur is the closest railway station, with Jammu Tawi the main junction. By air: Jammu Airport is the nearest airport. From Patnitop, Sanasar is a short 35–40 minute drive further on.
Where to Stay
Patnitop has the widest choice of hotels in the area, from budget rooms to resorts and JKTDC huts. It is also the busiest, so book early for weekends and the snow season. If you prefer peace and open views, consider staying in one of the homestays, huts and camps in Sanasar instead and visiting Patnitop as a day trip.
Don’t Stop at Patnitop: Why Sanasar Is Worth the Extra 20 km
Patnitop is convenient and well developed. But just 35–40 minutes away lies Sanasar, a wide, cup-shaped meadow ringed by pine and deodar forest, with a small lake at its heart. It is the underrated gem of the region.

- More to do: shikara rides, horse riding, zipline, zorbing and treks.
