Just behind the next ridge lies Sanasar Lake, the quiet centrepiece of one of the most beautiful meadows in the Jammu region. About Sanasar Lake
Sanasar Lake sits in the middle of a natural, cup-shaped meadow at around 2,050 metres, surrounded on all sides by tall deodar and pine forest. The bowl-like setting keeps the area sheltered and remarkably quiet, and the still water reflects the treeline on calm mornings.
The lake is small: you can stroll its full shoreline in about 20 minutes. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in setting, with open grassland all around, forested hills behind and, on clear days, distant views of mountain ranges including the Brahma massif.
Why Is It Called Sanasar?
The name comes from two small local lakes, Sana and Sar, which also gave their names to the twin villages here. Put together, they became “Sanasar”.

Walk the full shoreline in around 20 minutes, or find a spot on the grass and simply sit. The open meadow around the lake is perfect for family picnics and unhurried afternoons.

Come early for mirror-like reflections of the forest in the water, before the day-trippers arrive from Patnitop. Late afternoon light over the meadow is beautiful too.

Best Time to Visit Sanasar Lake
The lake is worth visiting year-round, but each season offers something different.
Spring (March–April)
Fresh green meadows and the Sanasar Tulip Garden blooming near the lake, usually best in early April.
Summer (May–June) ★
The best overall time. Warm days, cool evenings, full boating season and the meadow at its greenest. Bring a jacket, as mornings are chilly even in May.
Winter (December–February)
The meadow turns white with snow. Boating usually stops, and roads can be blocked after heavy snowfall, so check conditions before you set out.

How to Reach Sanasar Lake
Sanasar Lake lies about 19–20 km west of Patnitop, off the Jammu–Srinagar highway (NH-44). The lake is right in the Sanasar meadow, so once you reach Sanasar, you’ve arrived.
